Cornell 3rd grade recently welcomed ‘Judy Moody’ author Megan McDonald into their classrooms. Ms. McDonald spoke for about an hour with students at Cornell and students from around the country and Canada via videoconference. An estimated 42,000 students watched live. Mrs. Schweers, Mrs. Freiss, and Mrs. Thomas and their classes had a lot of fun and asked great questions. After the discussion, Ms. McDonald signed a book for each 3rd grader. Students in Mrs. Patricia Dahmen’s Journalism Class were recently recognized at a luncheon with the FBI for their Operation HOPE PSA. At the luncheon, students learned about the effects of opioid abuse and careers in federal law enforcement.

This spring 3rd graders in Mrs. Sandy Schweers, Mrs. Robin Freiss, and Mrs. Casey Thomas’ classes are doing some gardening. The students are learning about germination and will be growing Brassica Plants (also known as the Wisconsin Fast Plants), radishes, spinach, and tomatoes. They will also be measuring and charting plant growth. Students are reading Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens in which a rabbit tricks a bear into giving him all of the good parts of the harvest.

Mrs. Susan Dunning’s 8th grade science classes recently watched a knee replacement live via videoconference. During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon and entire operating room team discussed the anatomy of the human body, the surgery they were performing, and helped students learn about a wide range of medical careers. The videoconference was hosted by the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) which is located in Columbus, Ohio.

The Cornell Baseball Team is playing West Shamokin at PNC Park, this Thursday (4/27) evening at 6:15. Admission to the game is free. We hope you are able to attend!

Congratulations to elementary teachers, Mrs. Julie Roncone, Ms. Mara Kramer, and Mrs. Jamie Chambers, who just completed a 4.5 credit Penn Literacy Network (PLN) course at the University of Pennsylvania. Through their coursework they have learned about research-based best practice to engage students in deeper learning as related to literacy and have implemented these strategies in their teaching practice.

Congratulations to Mrs. Brittany Ritchie for getting funded by Donors Choose for an iPad Mini and case to be used with 2nd graders. Mrs. Ritchie is already off to the races with the 2nd graders and created an iMovie about “Dex Heart of a Hero.” Congratulations Mrs. Ritchie and thank you Donors Choose!

Both teachers spent a lot of time preparing for the rigorous online exam they had to pass to earn the credential. Way to go Mrs. Bardelli & Mrs. Klein!
